The Shire and the Hobbits

The Shire (Pensive Setting)

Appears in:

1|1|2 The Shire
1|1|3 Bag End
[00:47-01:07] First use of the flute for the pensive setting, other than the brief statement at the beginning of the track.
1|1|4 Very Old Friends
1|1|7 Keep it Secret, Keep it Safe
1|1|8 A Conspiracy Unmasked
1|1|11 Saruman the White
1|2|5 Rivendell
1|2|8 The Great Eye
1|3|4 The Fighting Uruk-Hai
1|3|7 The Road Goes Ever On... Pt. 1
[04:56-05:56] Magpie: The CR liner notes refer to "A Hobbit's Understanding" for this track. The beginning of this segment, 4:56-5:20, seems more like the Pensive Setting than Hobbit's Understanding. I think the Pensive moves to some held (Hobbit?) chords at 5:20 and then to the Hymn Setting at 5:29 (to the end). The rolling chords are quite audible.
1|3|9 The Road Goes Ever On... Pt. 2
[00:00-00:14] magpie: I think the rolling chords make this the Hymn Setting
[02:56-03:11] magpie: I think the rolling chords make this the Hymn Setting
2|1|2 Elven Rope
2|1|3 Lost in Emyn Muil
2|1|5 Ugl˙k's Warriors
2|3|7 The Entmoot Decides
[00:36-00:52] This is a burdened variation on the Pensive Setting, playing behind Pippin's attempt to cheer up Merry.
2|3|13 The Tales That Really Matter
3|1|11 Flight from Edoras
[00:43-01:01] From the Annotated Score: "As Merry presents Pippin a packet of Longbottom Leaf for the trip, solo clarinet swerves back towards the stepwise motion of the Shire theme while the strings reiterate the Fellowship material."
